Cleaning Grout with a System – How Fugentorpedo Works

Conventional grout cleaning often does not deliver the desired result because with purely chemical cleaning, dirt and residues deep inside the grout are often not fully reached. In particular, porous cement-based grout absorbs limescale, soap residue, biofilm and grease deep into the upper material layer, which often causes the joints to become permanently dark.

Fugentorpedo is a mechanical grout-cleaning system based on the use of industrial diamonds as an abrasive. The principle is simple and effective: mechanical pre-treatment + suitable cleaner + protection. By carefully sanding the upper dirty layer, the surface of the grout is opened up so that cleaning agents can work much more effectively.

To help prevent the grout from becoming dirty again too quickly after cleaning, it is advisable to protect the grout afterwards. You can find out how this works here:

Important Application Notice

Fugentorpedo® is intended exclusively for cleaning cement-based tile grout indoors. Before use, always test in an inconspicuous area first to ensure that both the grout and the surrounding surface are suitable.

Fugentorpedo® is not suitable in particular for:

  • natural stone, marble, slate or other soft or polished stone surfaces
  • glazed or coated surfaces outside the grout joint
  • silicone or acrylic joints
  • use with motorized assistance

Important: Always work with light pressure and guide the grinding bar precisely inside the grout joint. Improper use may cause damage to grout, tiles or adjacent surfaces.

Clean Grout in Just 5 Steps

All you need for clean grout is Fugentorpedo – and a little finesse.

1. CHOOSING THE CORRECT GRINDING BAR WIDTH

1Waehlen

First check which grinding bar fits the grout joint you want to clean. The bar should be neither too wide nor too narrow.

Grinding bars for Fugentorpedo® are available in 2 mm, 3 mm and 5.5 mm widths. These correspond to the most common grout widths.

TIP: Use the grout-length chart to calculate the running metres of grout.

Important: Always use the grinding bar that matches the grout width as closely as possible. An unsuitable grinding bar may unnecessarily affect adjacent tile surfaces or reduce cleaning effectiveness.

2. INSERTING THE GRINDING BAR

Insert the grinding bar into the groove of the handle until it clicks audibly into place.

Note: Before use, check that the grinding bar is correctly seated and securely locked in place. Do not use damaged or heavily worn parts.

3. SANDING THE GROUT JOINT

Fugen reinigen
  • To loosen superficial and deep-seated dirt, sand the grout joint slowly back and forth with a steady hand and light pressure. Important: the bar must always remain precisely inside the joint.
  • Remove the sanding dust and, if necessary, touch up lightly.
  • Please note: As a rule, use the grinding bar only once on the grout in order to avoid excessive abrasion of the grout material. If this step is carried out correctly, it is often no longer necessary during future cleaning applications.

TIP: For short joints or hard-to-reach areas, the Fugentorpedo hand grinding bar is ideal.

Safety notice: Do not work with excessive pressure – material removal may occur. Do not inhale sanding dust. Always test in an inconspicuous area before application.

4. CLEANING THE GROUT JOINT

  • Before cleaning, replace the grinding bar with the grout brush. To remove the grinding bar from the handle, press the locking mechanism on the bar and pull it out.
  • Spray the grout joint with a suitable cleaning agent and observe the recommended contact time.
  • Clean the joint with the grout brush until the dirt loosens. Remove the cleaner with a damp cloth and wipe with clean water afterwards.

Note: Use cleaning agents only in accordance with the respective manufacturer’s instructions. Ensure good ventilation, especially when using chlorine-based products.

5. PROTECTING THE GROUT WITH THE GROUT PROTECTION PEN

  • After cleaning, we recommend protecting the grout with the grout protection pen. The transparent liquid impregnation penetrates deep into the capillaries of the grout and helps reduce the rapid build-up of new dirt.
  • Before application, the grout must be clean and completely dry.
  • Shake the grout protection pen well.
  • Gently press the pen tip several times into the joint so that the solution flows into the tip. It is best to work from bottom to top.
  • Apply only to the grout joints and avoid dripping; if necessary, wipe off immediately.
  • Fully effective after a drying time of 6–12 hours.

TIP: Test in an inconspicuous area before use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to sand the grout every time I clean it?

No. Sanding is usually only necessary for heavily soiled or older grout. With regular maintenance, cleaning with a suitable cleaner and brush is often enough.

Can I also clean coloured grout?

Yes, when used carefully, it also works on coloured cement-based grout. Always test the cleaner in an inconspicuous area first.

Can I use Fugentorpedo® on silicone joints?

No. Silicone or acrylic joints are not suitable areas of application for Fugentorpedo®.

Is Fugentorpedo® suitable for natural stone?

No. Natural stone, marble, slate and other soft or polished stone surfaces are unsuitable applications.

What should I do if the grout is very old or damaged?

Loose, brittle or heavily damaged grout should not be treated mechanically. In such cases, grout repair or renewal is often more appropriate than cleaning.
